Under the Canopy by Mike Busby's School of Photography

The Canopy in Riverfront Park

Earlier today I received an invitation from my good friend Sharon to do some night shooting. Plan A fell through, so we found ourselves photographing the lights under the canopy in Riverfront Park.

The decision was to capture the color of the transitioning lights which meant a shorter exposure. A long exposure would render the lights white as the shifting colors quickly mix and add to white. So, the shutter was set at 1/6th of second at f2.4, ISO 400.

Bright lights against a field of blue.

The camera was set on a tripod using back button focusing. Focus was achieved once, and the release button was as often as needed to stop-action the lights whenever a cool pattern emerged.

One final note is that I've been hitting composition hard over the last few months. Tonight I was looking for energy, mass, movement and shapes. The pattern was something I saw during shooting, but it was during post that this image emerged as a good candidate.

It was a cold night, but a really good night as I went out with a friend and then we bumped into a mutual friend. A really good night.

Thanks for Reading and I'll have a bunch of photography classes posted for the school by the end of next week.
