Around the Lupins - by Spokane Photographer Mike Busby

It started with a comment from my wife that there were a lot of Lady Bugs in the back yard. It has been a while since I've shot macro photography, and I had forgotten how much I enjoy it.

I shot just around the one plant. Interesting things tend to happen when you pick a spot and just wait.

I shoot with a Nikon d810 and a Tamron 180 Macro. I use to shoot only Nikon lenses, but the third party lenses are getting just as good, if not better, and they are nowhere near as expensive.

Shooting small requires patience. The Depth of field is extremely narrow and focus needs to occur sharp on the eyes.

One of the more interesting aspects of macro photography is the smooth effect of light. The tendency is view "quality" as an aspect of light, but this isn't accurate. Soft light is the result of a large light source against a smaller subject. The noonday sun fosters harsh light with bright highlights and deep shadows because the sun's size is dramatically smaller than the everyday objects it lights. However, as the subjects become smaller, they become closer to the size of the sun, and the light has the effect of softening.

Landscapes form in many sizes. In this case, the lupins in the back provide scale to the Lady Bug. Macro landscapes are not easily found, but they are worth the time to explore.

Happy Lady Bugs.

It amazes me how many things there are to shoot and how close to home they can be found.
